A. Lawrence Romano (pictured above) is the founder and Managing Partner of Wine Appellations, Ltd.

 

An Ohio native, Larry initially became interested in International Business while completing his undergraduate studies at Georgetown University. He relocated to California in 1954, at the request of Robert Mondavi & Carlo Rossi, to represent Charles Krug in Northern California. At the time, Larry was selling more Krug wines in Ohio than Krug was selling in California.

 

Larry went on to become the Northern California Sales Manager of Beaulieu Vineyards. Soon after, he formed the A.L. Romano Wine Company, which specialized in distributing wines from California and importing wines from Germany, France & Italy. The A.L. Romano Wine Company was the first to distribute Robert Mondavi wines, while introducing Biondi Santi, Pio Cesare, Anselmi, Prunotto, Mastroberardino, Barberani & Castello di Fonterutolli into the U.S. market. Meanwhile, Larry consulted on the introduction of Roederer Estates, California, and was one of the founders of Vichon Winery.

 

Wine Appellations, Ltd. was founded in 1992, with the idea of presenting and selling quality limited production wines to restaurants & retail stores. As importers and brokers, Wine Appellations, Ltd. represents several of the finest limited production wineries from Italy and Israel.

 

The inspiration of Wine Appellations, Ltd. comes from Managing Partner, A. Lawrence Romano’s knowledge and experience as an importer of European wines. Larry found that the quality wines are dependent on four major factors: soil, climate, grape variety and fallible man. Additionally, he concluded that the great wines of the world come from small vineyards.

 

Today, all of the wines are personally selected by Nancy, Robert, John and of course, Larry Romano.

Our criteria are as follows:

• Annual production is 20,000 cases or less

• The grape variety is planted in the soil & climate in which it is best suited to grow

• Grapes are picked by hand, not machine

• Native yeast / Indigenous fermentation processes are used

• One wine variety per appellation is represented, which means that the portfolio of wines complement, rather than compete with one another

Lions Wines was created in 2008 to fulfill the growing need in the industry for high quality non mainstream products at affordable prices.

Lions Wines specializes in the import and distribution of boutique wines from across the globe with a focus on small wineries. Because Lions Wines focuses on small productions, and act as an importer and distributor, the company is able to offer high quality wines at competitive prices. Moreover, because the relationship is with small producers, the company is able to sign exclusive import and distribution rights for the US territory.

 

On the client side, Lions Wines also fulfill the need for more customer driven distributors that not only listen to the need of their clients but also offer to assist them in the depletion of their inventories.
